Abstract

Description

Among archaeologists, there is a rapidly emerging recognition of the value and significance of open-access digital database repositories. However, with this growing interest we encounter the challenges, limitations, and practicalities of such endeavors. As our capacity to explore complex, multi-component datasets using advanced geospatial and statistical modelling broadens, we must continue to reinforce the importance of analytical standardization, handling of metadata, accurate georeferencing, and long-term data management strategies. Moreover, the resources and expertise required to develop and maintain flexible cyberinfrastructure with which to optimally utilize digital repositories cannot be understated. Building upon a decades-long legacy of lithic data collection, we offer insight into standards and best practices for the management of lithic geochemical data at MURR. In looking toward the future, what can the databases at MURR contribute to a regional-scale digital repository? How can the development of regional-scale repositories shape new questions regarding human mobility and raw material use?
