Abstract
Description
We present an analysis of lithic assemblages from Quebrada de Urcuro in Salta Province's puna, dated ca. 2000 BP. This study was oriented towards the characterization of the assemblages considering the use of lithic raw material as a starting point. The salient objective is to explore lithic technology in human adaptations to risky environments -puna in this case study-, and to observe main tendencies that will allow us to compare lithic raw material patterns with other sites in the region and discuss about social interaction networks during early moments of occupation. Throughout the analysis of stratigraphic materials we observed that lithic assemblage patterns from Urcuro are consistent with those cited for other areas in Argentina's puna. Nevertheless, there are differences with patterns previously detected in Quebrada de Matancillas, only 5 km from the site. An hypotheses that may explain this difference is also presented.
