This paper approaches one type of material –human skeletons– from a double point of view: archaeological and bioanthropological. The sample is composed of unpublished and dated material corresponding to eight burials located between the San Matías Gulf and the mouth of the Chubut River, covering a time range between 2400 and 440 B.P. The available information on cranial deformation and mortuary practices is analyzed, and their evolution and probable interrelationships through time are evaluated. The variability of human morphology is also studied, contrasting this sample with others in the region. The results suggest that during that lapse the northeastern coast of Chubut was peopled by human groups with a similar cranial morphology and stature and which buried their dead directly in the ground and in diverse ways. These groups would be genetically linked to the Tehuelche or terrestrial hunter-gatherers of the historical period.
