dc.descriptionThe Holocene evolution of the Atlantic coast is key for the study of human occupations in the northeast of the Fuegian steppe. Its impact in the differential destruction of littoral archaeological sites north of Nombre Cape due to coastline retreat was already acknowledged. Changes created by littoral dynamics at San Sebastián Bay also deeply modified the landscape and the availability of biotic and abiotic resources. The El Páramo Spit was the trigger for the geomorphological changes that occurred in this segment of the coast, a reason to select it as the focus of our archaeological assessment. In this paper we review the material transformations created by coastal evolution (i.e. availability of raw materials, food, and revamped environments) and evaluate their impact in the cultural geography of hunter-gatherers during the Late Holocene, as well as its importance for the human occupations during historical times. We conclude that the geomorphological evolution of San Sebastian Bay during the Middle and Late Holocene was accompanied by the anthropomorphization of the landscape. Therefore, the study of the archaeological record requires regional survey strategies concordant with physical and cultural geography history.en-US
dc.descriptionLa evolución holocena de la costa atlántica es un fenómeno clave para el estudio de las ocupaciones humanas en el noreste de la estepa fueguina. Al norte del cabo Nombre ya se ha destacado su impacto en la destrucción diferencial de los contextos litorales debido al retroceso de la línea de costa. En la bahía San Sebastián, los cambios introducidos por la dinámica litoral además modificaron profundamente el paisaje y la disponibilidad de recursos bióticos y abióticos. La espiga El Páramo ha sido un elemento central en los cambios geomorfológicos operados en este segmento de la costa por lo que aquí la empleamos como eje para nuestra evaluación arqueológica. En este trabajo revisamos las transformaciones materiales aparejadas por la evolución costera (i.e. disponibilidad de materias primas, alimentos, nuevos espacios y ambientes), y evaluamos su impacto en la geografía cultural de los cazadores-recolectores durante el Holoceno tardío, así como su importancia para las ocupaciones de colonos durante tiempos históricos. Concluimos que la evolución geomorfológica de la bahía San Sebastián durante el Holoceno medio y tardío fue acompañada por un proceso de antropomorfización del paisaje cuyo estudio impone estrategias de exploración arqueológicas regionales ajustadas al devenir de la geografía física y cultural.es-ES
