dc.descriptionEl concepto de sedentarismo ha sido ampliamente utilizado para el estudio del surgimiento de sociedades complejas, tanto en Sudamérica como en otras partes del mundo. También ha sido la fuente de desacuerdos ocasionales sobre cómo deberíamos identificar la complejidad temprana en el registro arqueológico de la región. Sin embargo, a pesar del amplio uso del concepto de sedentarismo, un problema importante ha sido que los arqueólogos que han trabajado en Sudamérica casi nunca han definido esta categoría y, cuando lo hacen, los criterios arqueológicos para identificarla no siempre son presentados ni analizados. Otra problemática a la cual nos enfrentamos para entender el sedentarismo cabalmente reside en su alta variabilidad a lo largo del continente. Las evidencias procedentes de diversas regiones, como las tierras bajas orientales o las cordilleras andinas, indican distintos tipos de modos de vida sedentarios. En este artículo presentamos una definición amplia de sedentarismo, así como las diversas manifestaciones y variables registradas en distintos sitios a lo largo del continente.
dc.descriptionThe concept of sedentism has been widely used to study the emergence of complex societies in South America and in other parts of the world. It has also been the source of occasional disagreements about how we should identify early complexity in the archaeological record of the continent. However, despite the wide use of the concept, a major problem has been that archaeologists who have worked with this concept in South America almost never define this concept and, when they do, the archaeological criteria for its identification are not always presented or analyzed. Another problem in attempting to understand a fully sedentary lifestyle is its high variability throughout the continent. The evidence from various regions, such as the eastern lowlands and Andean mountain ranges, indicate different types of sedentism. In this paper we consider a broad definition of sedentism and various manifestations and variables recorded at different sites throughout the continent.
