The Antumpa site (Humahuaca Department, Jujuy) is one of the few known for the Formative or Early Ceramic Period in the Humahuaca Quebrada region. This period is usually seen as a time of sedentary village life and largely egalitarian societies, with no permanent social differences or institutionalized political authorities. However, the investigations that are being carried out at Antumpa show that its Formative component presents noticeable intrasite differences in its architectural and artefactual aspects. An artificial mound stands out, both in the quality and quantity of the archaeological materials recovered. In this work I approach this intrasite variability, suggesting that it could reflect the existence of a certain degree of social differentiation at the site during the Early Ceramic or Formative period, and that the mound represents the area where a social group with greater access to non local and sumptuary goods resided.
