dc.description | Traditionally, zooarchaeology has looked at the faunal remains of the archaeological record as a result of subsistence activities with a tendency to satisfy the basic needs of human groups. Thereby, animals are seen as a nutritional source and raw material to manufacture artifacts. In addition, it’s assumed that those animals are incorporated into human activity through hunting. Nevertheless, a look at our own society shows that the bonds we establish with animals are not exclusively vinculated to the nutritional aspects, and that their ways of obtaining are more varied than hunting or slaughtering. On this basis, the aim of this presentation is to achieve an approach to the different ways in which animals have been incorporated into human activity areas. For that, we performed a chronicle revision from the traveling Europeans that visited mainland Patagonia between the XVI and XIX centuries. We carried out a record of these documents focusing on the mentions of animal species, their uses; but also the ways in which these animals were incorporated to the places where they have been processed, prepared, cooked, consumed and/or deposited. Although hunting is the most frequent way to obtain fauna, there are other social mechanisms such as that includes interchange, gifts and offerings, shown by the chronicles. Thus, the results invite us to think over from the chronicles collected information about the obtaining animals, the many interaction ways among animals and humans in the past, over and above those focused strictly on the subsistence and nutrition, encouraging to enlarge the panorama from the visible record, without loosing importance on the animals. | en-US |
